Like many other platforms, Booking.com does charge a fee, because it uses a business model based on fees paid whenever a traveller books accommodation through the platform. What percentage does Booking com take? We discuss the topic in this article about Booking com fees.
As with other OTAs and sites such as Airbnb and Booking.com, fees are charged to owners, paid for each booking made and completed on the platform.
But how does Booking.com commission in the case of a no-show? In case of both free cancellation and non-refundable cancellation, the OTA identifies four other Booking.com commission scenarios per host:
- When the owner has charged the guest for a non-refundable booking, whether or not the guest has stayed
- When the owner has charged the guest payment for a partially refundable or non-refundable booking
When the guest is charged for a no-show or cancellation - For free cancellation, the owner charges the guest the cancellation fee if the guest cancels the stay after the deadline.
Overbooking fees
Overbooking fees must also be considered among the commission models applied by the platform because, as reported by Booking itself: “The accommodation was made available on Booking.com. In addition to charging the fee, we ask you to cover relocation costs for the guest.” Please read our article to find out how to avoid overbooking and related fees.
Booking.com fees may vary slightly depending on the country, for example, according to the local legislation of the accommodation’s location or type.
Booking fee: Percentage
On average, Booking.com fees are about 15% of the total booking, and this percentage is average compared to other platforms, such as Airbnb fees. The OTA for vacation rentals charges a host fee of 14-16%.
How much is the Booking.com commission
How does the owner of the listing calculate how much it is the Booking.com commission? As mentioned above, the Booking fee is about 15%. To understand how much Booking.com earns on bookings, subtract this from the total booking amount (also considering local and state taxes).
As you may know, if you have listed your property on Booking.com, you only receive the booking revenue immediately if the guest pays directly at the property.
So how to pay Booking.com commission?
The platform deducts the commission percentage from the total amount payable to the owner at the end of the month. If the owner has only received direct payments, paying the commission by bank transfer is required.
How to avoid Booking.com fees? In some cases, it is possible to avoid paying fees on Booking.com. The platform highlights 3 possibilities:
- When the owner has chosen to waive the cancellation fee for non-refundable bookings;
- When the owner has flagged the reservation as a no-show and chosen to waive the cancellation fee;
- When the owner reported the credit card as invalid because it could not be charged.
Of course, you can pay fewer Booking.com fees at the end of the month if you encourage direct bookings through a Booking Engine module on your website. Even so, giving up Booking.com to avoid paying commission fees is counterproductive, considering the visibility advantages you gain from this platform (speaking of visibility, download our guide on how to increase your Booking ranking).
In addition to optimizing fees, having a well-structured Bed and Breakfast business plan can significantly contribute to the financial sustainability and success of your property on platforms like Booking.com.
