In the hotel industry, knowing the types of hotel rooms and their respective classification is of fundamental importance for applying the right rates and effectively managing staff deployment. If you’ve already heard of a standard room, a deluxe room, and have always wondered what the difference is between a room and a suite, know that there are many other types of hotel rooms. In this article, we will discover what the types of hotel rooms are.
Hotel terminology classifies the types of hotel rooms according to 3 categories:
- Based on the number of beds;
- Based on the layout of the types of hotel rooms and the services offered;
- Based on the type of bed.
As we have seen, using hotel terminology to define the different types of hotel rooms helps hoteliers with revenue management and organizing staff deployment, but it is also useful for potential guests.
In the hotel industry, knowing the types of hotel rooms and their respective classification is of fundamental importance for applying the right rates (read our article about hotel rates types to learn more) and effectively managing staff deployment.
Through hotel terminology, they can have a more transparent idea of the types of hotel rooms for which they are spending and the related services offered. This classification applies to all types of hotels, even smaller ones like boutique hotels.
Single Room
Double Room
Triple Room
Quadruple Room
In this classification, we distinguish 5 types of hotel rooms:
Standard Room: Meaning
Superior Room and Deluxe Room: Meaning
- the superior room;
- the deluxe room.
The deluxe room, compared to the standard room, provides an upgrade: the space is larger, the services offered are more, and the guest enjoys a better view. What is meant by a deluxe room? Being more spacious, the deluxe can accommodate more people, such as a couple or a family of 3 people.
These are all the types of hotel rooms based on layout and services offered, but it’s not over; there are also suites.
The suite is often distinguished into “Junior Suite” and “Standard Suite.”
The junior suite, compared to the standard just described, always has a sleeping area and a living area but in a smaller room.
Within this category also falls the Presidential Suite, often chosen by families because, in addition to the master bedroom, it also has a secondary bedroom, along with all the amenities found in other suites.
If you think that the classification of beds ends only with a single bed and a double bed, it’s not so. In this case, too, there are many more types:
- Queen Room: a type of hotel room with a double bed, whose bed is of standard size.
- King Room: this is a type of hotel room that contains a larger double bed, namely the king size.
- Twin Room: a room composed of two single beds but occupied by only one guest.
- Studio: this type of hotel room is also common in other non-hotel accommodations such as vacation homes or B&B, and consists of a sofa bed.
