In the hotel industry, knowing the types of hotel rooms and their respective classification is of fundamental importance for applying the right rates and effectively managing staff deployment. If you’ve already heard of a standard room, a deluxe room, and have always wondered what the difference is between a room and a suite, know that there are many other types of hotel rooms. In this article, we will discover what the types of hotel rooms are.

Hotel Terminology: Types of hotel rooms classification

What are the types of hotel rooms?

Hotel terminology classifies the types of hotel rooms according to 3 categories:

  1. Based on the number of beds;
  2. Based on the layout of the types of hotel rooms and the services offered;
  3. Based on the type of bed.

As we have seen, using hotel terminology to define the different types of hotel rooms helps hoteliers with revenue management and organizing staff deployment, but it is also useful for potential guests.

In the hotel industry, knowing the types of hotel rooms and their respective classification is of fundamental importance for applying the right rates (read our article about hotel rates types to learn more) and effectively managing staff deployment.

Through hotel terminology, they can have a more transparent idea of the types of hotel rooms for which they are spending and the related services offered. This classification applies to all types of hotels, even smaller ones like boutique hotels.

Types of Hotel Rooms: Number of Beds

Let’s look at the classification of types of hotel rooms based on the first category: by the number of beds and therefore possible occupants.

Single Room

These types of hotel rooms are equipped to accommodate one person or a couple, and usually have a double bed or two single beds.

Double Room

The double room, as the name suggests, can accommodate two people and therefore has two separate single beds or a double bed.

Triple Room

This type of hotel room must be able to accommodate 3 people, so it can have 3 single beds, a double bed and a single bed, or two double beds.

Quadruple Room

A quadruple room can accommodate 4 people. These are spacious units that can have two double beds or, sometimes, are furnished similarly to a hostel, with bunk beds.

Types of Hotel Rooms: Room Layout

As we have seen, the types of hotel rooms can also be classified based on the room layout, square meters, and services offered (such as in-room services).
In this classification, we distinguish 5 types of hotel rooms:

Standard Room: Meaning

The standard room is the most common type of hotel room, offering minimal services such as cleaning or a mini-fridge bar, and does not have a large area. For this reason, it belongs to the most economical price range and does not have a particularly beautiful view, but don’t worry, if the guest is not particularly satisfied after booking, they can always opt for additional services.

Superior Room and Deluxe Room: Meaning

In addition to the standard room, there are also other luxury types of hotel rooms:

  • the superior room;
  • the deluxe room.
The superior room is slightly larger than the standard and has some elements that improve it, such as a more pleasant view or a whirlpool tub.

The deluxe room, compared to the standard room, provides an upgrade: the space is larger, the services offered are more, and the guest enjoys a better view. What is meant by a deluxe room? Being more spacious, the deluxe can accommodate more people, such as a couple or a family of 3 people.

These are all the types of hotel rooms based on layout and services offered, but it’s not over; there are also suites.

What’s the Difference Between a Room and a Suite?

If you’re wondering what the difference is between a room and a suite, the latter differs from a normal room in a hotel because it is significantly more spacious, and in addition to the sleeping area, there is a separate living area. In the suite, the guest also has access to a larger bathroom and an outdoor space, such as a small terrace or balcony. Finally, in some standard suites, guests can find a small kitchenette.

The suite is often distinguished into β€œJunior Suite” and β€œStandard Suite.”

The junior suite, compared to the standard just described, always has a sleeping area and a living area but in a smaller room.

Within this category also falls the Presidential Suite, often chosen by families because, in addition to the master bedroom, it also has a secondary bedroom, along with all the amenities found in other suites.

Types of Hotel Rooms: Type of Bed

As we have seen, hotel terminology classifies the types of hotel rooms also based on the type of bed.
If you think that the classification of beds ends only with a single bed and a double bed, it’s not so. In this case, too, there are many more types:
  • Queen Room: a type of hotel room with a double bed, whose bed is of standard size.
  • King Room: this is a type of hotel room that contains a larger double bed, namely the king size.
  • Twin Room: a room composed of two single beds but occupied by only one guest.
  • Studio: this type of hotel room is also common in other non-hotel accommodations such as vacation homes or B&B, and consists of a sofa bed.
